Original Fine Art & Limited Edition Giclées

General FAQs - Jane Girardot Art

General Questions

Q: What is a Giclée?
A: Giclée (pronouned 'zhee-clay') in French means 'a spray or squirt of liquid'. This is the method used to create fine art reproductions with amazing resolution and clarity. Giclées are produced from a digital image or scan of the original art. The digital image is then sent to a high quality printer which can print on a variety of mediums (canvas, papers, etc). The inks used are not standard home quality printer inks but pigmented inks which are meant to last without fading or cracking. Depending on the printer, it may use between 6-12 different inks to produce the colors on the medium. Without exposure to sunlight, the inks will not show any fading for well over 100 years.  Back to FAQs

Q: How are your Giclées made?
A: We use only professional services to capture our original paintings digitally using the Better Light Scan Back system with a 4 x 5 view camera. This system uses one continuous scan, as the light is collected by three, individually filtered rows of pixels – this is called a tri-linear CCD. It moves across the “film plane” capturing light, one row of pixels at a time. The camera is gathering a huge population of pixels (often 144 Megapixels or MORE) over a large format area. All of the pixels are PURE, true RGB color, not interpolated color, by the camera software.

Jane individually proofs each image against the original to insure it remains true to the colors of the original painting. The images are then reproduced using a professional wide format printer (typically Epson 9800). The Epson 9800 is an 8 color printer using K3 ultrachrome inks and is capable of 2880x1440 dpi resolution. Giclées are made on duck cotton canvas or other mediums as requested. Jane reviews each giclée for color quality and will individually add paint strokes to maintain the true intent of her art. All giclées are then sealed with a UV coating to protect the painting surface.  Back to FAQs

Q: What is the difference between a Limited Edition Giclee and Canvas Prints from Fine Art America?
A: Both processes that create an image on canvas require a high resolution image and a high quality printer to spray the ink on the canvas. For canvas prints from Fine Art America, we've used a high resolution image shot with an 18 megapixel camera under studio lighting conditions. For our Limiited Edition Giclées, we've used the very high end process described in 'How are your Giclées made?'. Using this method produces the highest quality image and therefore is more expensive.

Each giclée is then reviewed for color quality, numbered and signed by the artist and Jane will individually add paint strokes to maintain the true intent of her art. The Canvas Prints from Fine Art America are not signed, numbered and will not have additional paint applied to the canvas by the artist.

Therefore, due to the higher image capture costs, the extra individual attention by the artist, added paint strokes to each giclée and artists numbered signature, the Limited Edition Giclées are offered at a higher cost than Canvas Prints.  Back to FAQs

Q: Will you do "commissioned" art?
A: If you like Jane's style of painting, she would be more than happy to discuss any particular scene or scenario that you would like to have painted. Generally, she will create an approximate digital image to be painted for your review. From there, she will create the painting of your subject matter. Costs will be based on canvas size and exclusivity of the finished painting but will be more than reasonable. For an example of Jane's commissioned art, click here. If this is an option you would like, please do not hesitate to for more information.  Back to FAQs

Q: What does your stretched canvas consist of?
A: Original canvas paintings use 100% duck cotton canvas and are gallery wrapped (stretched around the 3/4" thick pine bars and are held in place with a durable vinyl spine making them staple free). Jane paints her originals around the sides so that they can be hung in place without a frame, if desired.

Our giclées use the same quality canvas as the originals. The canvas is stretched on 3/4" thick pine stretcher bars. The canvas is gallery wrapped (stretched around the bars and stapled on the back). The sides of the giclées are black in color. Back to FAQs

Q: Can my art be sent framed & ready to hang?
A: Yes, we can certainly accommodate a framed, ready to hang painting. We can offer you several types of frames at a very reasonable cost over retail stores. Please see our available framing options. If these do not meet your needs, please feel free to to discuss other possible framing options.  Back to FAQs

Q: What if I want a size or media not listed?
A: Our goal is your satisfaction and a beautiful piece of art that you can enjoy. We try to list multiple combinations of media types (canvas, lithograph, paper, etc) and sizes online. However, if a particular size or media is not listed, please to discuss its availability.  Back to FAQs

Q: What comes with each piece of art?
A: Each piece of art includes a Certificate Of Authenticity (COA) signed by the artist. The COA lists the edition size and number (if any), year of creation and a short statement about the artwork.   Back to FAQs

Q: What does the edition size mean?
A: The edition size indicates the maximum number of giclées/reproductions that are made from the original art. The artist guarantees that once the maximum edition size has been reached, absolutely no more giclées/reproductions will be made and the edition will be 'sold out'.  Back to FAQs
